Science-based information will be reviewed in order to debunk these diets. The information presented will help practitioners clear up the fad diet confusion when educating their clients.

10:00 Substance Abuse and Food Addiction: Integrative Strategies for Understanding, Assessing, Educating and Counseling – Lisa Dorfman, MS,RD,CSSD,CCMS,LMHC,FAND
While the concept of food addiction spans six decades, this controversial topic and diagnostic features and underlying roots presents challenges and opportunities to practitioners. This session will provide an overview of the history, diagnostic criteria, underlying causes; and will contrast and compare substance and food addictions. Treatment options, practical strategies and obstacles such as relapse will be addressed. Consequences of both food addiction and substance abuse which include obesity, depression, and anxiety will be discussed. Resources, tools and continuing education opportunities will be offered for dietitians and students interested in pursuing a career in this area of dietetics.

This presentation, by New Hampshire Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics current By-laws and Ethics Chairperson, will aid members in earning their required CEU in the area of ethics while learning how the Academy’s Dietetics Code of Ethics guides decision making in our everyday practice.

3:00 Smart Heart Meals: A Population Health Management Initiative – Jan Greer-Carney, MS, MBA, RDN, LD
Smart Heart Meals is a granted funded, population health management initiative being carried out locally at Concord Hospital. This dynamic program provides patients with Congestive Heart Failure, who have been readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge, 30 days of 2-gram sodium meals after discharge. This pilot program is one of a kind and already yielding compelling arguments for its continuation. Since January 2018, a total of 18 clients have completed the program without being readmitted. Only one patient in the pilot study has been readmitted during their 30 day post-hospital period. Patients are not only showing an increased understanding of their dietary restrictions but also have demonstrated increased strength. A session you won’t want to miss!
