March 4, 2024 – Today, on World Obesity Day and the official start to Obesity Care Week, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics joins collaborating groups American Diabetes Association, Obesity Action Coalition, The Obesity Society, Obesity Medicine Association, and American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, for a day of advocacy on Capitol Hill for obesity care initiatives, including the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act.
The Academy is a proud champion of the bipartisan, bicameral Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, which would expand the providers and programs that could deliver IBT within Medicare Part B and would provide coverage for anti-obesity medications in Medicare Part D. You can add your support today by taking the Academy’s TROA action alert – tell your members of Congress that comprehensive coverage for obesity treatment must include lifestyle interventions such as intensive behavioral counseling in addition to anti-obesity medications.
In other obesity care efforts, the Academy recently shared its statementon anti-obesity medication and the role of lifestyle interventions delivered by RDNs. Resources in this area are in development, including a white paper on anti-obesity medication; public policy implications and interprofessional opportunities; as well as informational webinars on the latest science and impact on advancing nutrition and dietetics practice.
