Jane Hackett, MA, RD, CDE, LD, Celebrates 50 Years as a Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Jane Hackett, MA, RD, CDE, LD, Clinical Specialist and Diabetes Educator for HealthReach Diabetes, Endocrine and Nutrition Center of Exeter Hospital, began her career by interning at the Bronx VA Hospital in New York. Jane worked at the Bronx VA as a clinical RD for 3 years following completion of her internship. Jane proceeded to complete her Master of Arts degree in Nutrition Education at New York University.

Following her time in New York, Jane moved to Connecticut, started a family and worked as a consultant at a long-term care facility. In addition, she presented Weight Management Programs for the New England Dairy Council in corporations throughout Connecticut. Jane was active in the Connecticut Dietetic Association holding several board positions including President.

In the early 90’s she took a job at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, as the Outpatient RD where she counseled people and gave lectures to staff and community members. She earned her CDE during that time and was a regular guest on the local radio station. She also conducted a weight management program for staff and community members. She started cooking demonstrations for community members and counseled patients in Cardiac Rehab where she gave group classes as well. While in Connecticut she also served as an instructor for student nurses at Fairfield University.

In 2003 Jane moved to New Hampshire where she started as Outpatient RD at Exeter Hospital. She worked for the Community Education Department in addition to presenting lectures to the medical staff and the community, participated in Health Fairs, gave cooking demonstrations to community members and on WMUR for the Heart Association, facilitated the Better Choice, Better Health chronic disease self-management program, and worked in the Cardiac Rehab Department where she did one-on-one counseling as well as group education classes.

Presently Jane works in the outpatient Diabetes Center at Exeter Hospital where she counsels patients one-on-one, gives group education classes, participates in the annual Advisory Board meeting and prepares dinner for 20+ people at this meeting. Jane hopes to continue her role as RD/CDE at Exeter Hospital as long as she can.

Jane states that it has been an honor to be a member of the Academy and a profession that has provided her with joy, continual education and immense satisfaction.
