NHAND Recognizes 50 Year Members

Maureen McCarthy, MPH was recognized at NHAND’s Annual Conference Awards & Recognition ceremony on April 20, 2023 at Cisco Brewers Portsmouth.

Maureen completed her BS in Human Nutrition & Foods at Cornell University and completed her internship at the University of California, San Francisco. After finishing her MPH at UC-Berkeley, she went on to work as  a WIC Nutritionist in East Palo Alto and later in Los Angeles.

In the early 80s, Maureen became certified as a lactation consultant after completing coursework at the UCLA School of Nursing. In the mid 80s, Maureen found the niche that would continue throughout her career, working with adult hemodialysis patients, first in Maine and later in Oregon. Maureen retired from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in 2015. Her last position there was the Transplant Dietitian, supporting the patients seen by the liver, kidney, pancreas and heart transplant teams.

While at OHSU, Maureen completed a 2-year fellowship in the Center for Ethics in Health Care, with a special focus on end of life issues as they might influence nutrition care.

Throughout her career, Maureen volunteered with local and state dietetics groups and nutrition councils. She has presented at local and national meetings, most often on the Nutrition Care Process, the nutrition-focused physical exam and transplant nutrition concerns.

Also recognized, but unable to attend the ceremony was 50-year member Patricia Markwith.
